If you’ve spent any time on photographer TikTok or Instagram lately, you’ve probably seen the scrunched paper (also called sculptural paper) backdrop trend. It’s bold, textured, dramatic and surprisingly simple to recreate with materials most studios already have.
We’ve been meaning to try it for a while, and this week we finally did.
And yes… it’s every bit as fun as it looks.
Why This Backdrop Works So Well
The beauty of this set is in its texture. The organic folds catch light in a way that instantly elevates the final images, creating depth, shape and movement without needing elaborate props or expensive materials.
For maternity photography, it’s especially beautiful. The softness of the paper contrasts perfectly with the curves of the bump and the background becomes a sculpted element that feels modern, editorial and artistic.
What You Need
The best part is, you probably already own everything!
- A roll of seamless paper
- Gaffer tape or masking tape
- A backdrop stand or board to build onto
- A bit of patience while you sculpt the paper into shape
No specialist equipment. No heavy lifting. Just creativity and a bit of spare time. You can watch the full tutorial and behind the scenes of our maternity photography session below.
