Pregnancy is a fleeting chapter, filled with excitement, anticipation, and beauty that deserves to be celebrated and remembered. One of the most common questions we hear at Abigail Lewis Photography is: “When is the best time to book my maternity photoshoot?”
The truth is, there are two important timelines to consider: when to book your session and when to have your session photographed.
When to Book Your Maternity Session
We always recommend booking your maternity session as early as you feel comfortable. For some parents, that’s right after a positive test, while for others it’s after the 12 week scan. There’s no wrong answer, it’s about when you feel ready.
Booking early is key because it:
- Secures your place in our diary before dates fill up.
- Gives us plenty of time to plan your bespoke experience, from wardrobe styling to locations.
- Allows for flexibility if you’re considering a destination maternity session or a babymoon photoshoot abroad.
When to Schedule Your Photoshoot
We typically photograph maternity sessions between 28 and 32 weeks of pregnancy. At this stage, your bump is beautifully rounded, you’re still comfortable enough to move and pose, and the glow of this season shines through.
If you’re planning to fly abroad for your maternity shoot, we recommend booking your session slightly earlier, between 22 and 26 weeks. This ensures travel remains safe and comfortable, while still capturing your pregnancy at its most radiant.
We occasionally extend sessions to around 34 weeks in special circumstances, such as unexpected weather delays or important appointments. However, we don’t recommend waiting much later than this, as energy levels dip and flexibility can become more limited.
Why Timing Matters
Booking your maternity photoshoot at the right time means you’ll feel relaxed, confident and supported throughout your session. It also gives us the opportunity to create emotive portraits that honour this once in a lifetime moment, portraits that become art, not just photographs.
At Abigail Lewis Photography, every maternity session is designed around you. Whether it’s a studio shoot in South Wales, a location in the UK, or a destination maternity session abroad, the experience is about capturing your story beautifully and authentically.
