One of the questions we hear most often is, “What if my baby doesn’t sleep?”
It’s a completely natural worry. So many of the newborn images parents fall in love with are those soft, curled, peaceful portraits and it’s easy to assume that a sleeping baby is the only way to achieve them.
Whether your baby sleeps soundly or stays wide awake, your session will be beautiful.
Every newborn is different. Some settle into a deep sleep almost instantly; others are more alert and curious about the world around them. Most drift gently between those stages throughout the session and we welcome it all. Our entire approach is designed around your baby’s natural rhythm, not the other way around.
When Baby Is Sleepy
Those dreamy, womb like poses you often see are usually easiest when babies are deeply relaxed. This is one of the reasons we schedule sessions between 5 and 14 days old, when little ones are naturally more curled and comfortable being gently posed.
Sleeping babies allow us to work slowly and quietly through the setups we’ve prepared for you, soft fabrics, delicate wraps, simple posing that highlights their tiny details. These images have a serene, timeless feel and they become some of the most cherished portraits in a gallery.
But sleep isn’t the only story we tell.

When Baby Is Awake
Awake babies bring something completely different and equally special to a session. Their bright eyes, gentle expressions and tiny movements offer glimpses of personality that change almost daily. An alert newborn might take in their surroundings, look directly toward the camera or watch you with the sweetest curiosity.
Some of our favourite images have come from moments like this. They feel honest and full of character, little reminders of who your baby was in those early days before sleep settled into a routine.
When babies are awake, we adapt the flow of the session. We choose positions that feel secure, keep everything calm and cosy and allow baby to guide the pace. There’s no pressure to be asleep and no expectation for things to follow a rigid plan.
There Is No “Right Way” for a Newborn Session
The most important thing to know is that your baby doesn’t need to behave in any particular way for the session to be successful. They can feed as often as they want. They can take their time settling. They can wake, sleep, wriggle and yawn.
Our sessions are intentionally slow, quiet and baby led. The calmness you feel in the studio is part of the experience and it allows everything to unfold naturally. When your baby relaxes, you relax and that’s when the most meaningful images happen.
Over the years, we’ve learned that the best galleries often include a mixture of both: peaceful sleepy portraits and gentle awake moments with tiny expressions you never want to forget.
A Session That Reflects Your Baby, Just As They Are
What ultimately matters is that your gallery feels true to your family and the little person you’ve just welcomed into the world. When you look back in years to come, you won’t remember whether they slept perfectly that morning, you’ll remember the way they curled into the basket, the way their milk drunk smiles or the way they finally drifted off wrapped on the beanbag.
Those are the memories we’re here to preserve.
