If we had to pick one location in South Wales that we come back to again and again, it would be Dunraven Bay. It's rare to find a single spot with this much range, a flat sweep of beach, dramatic rock formations, rock pools, a grassy headland looking out over the bay, and a ruined castle just a short walk away. Whatever mood or backdrop you're after for your maternity session, there's a good chance Dunraven Bay can give it to you.
A location for every season
Unlike some of the more weather dependent spots we shoot at, Dunraven Bay works all year round and at any time of day. We've had gorgeous sessions here in every season, each one looking completely different depending on the tide, the sky and the time of day. Golden hour here is, unsurprisingly, beautiful, the light hits the cliffs and rock pools in a way that's hard to beat. But we've also had stunning results shooting here in the middle of the day, or under a moody grey sky. It's genuinely one of the most versatile locations we work with.
Choosing your spot
Because there's so much packed into one location, part of the planning conversation for a Dunraven Bay session is choosing which version of the bay suits you best. The open beach gives that classic wide, airy feel. The rocks and cliffs bring in more texture and drama. The rock pools are wonderful for something a little different. And the grassy headland above the bay gives a softer, more elevated view.
Accessibility
Dunraven Bay is one of the more accessible locations we shoot at, which is part of why we love it. There's a car park right at the edge of the beach with a ramp straight down onto the sand, so you don't need to manage steps or a long walk to get there. Do bear in mind this car park fills up quickly during the summer months, if it's full you'll usually be directed to an overflow car park a little further up the hill. You'll need cash to pay for parking, unless you hold a blue badge.
When to book
Because it works in every season and at any time of day, Dunraven Bay is a brilliant choice if you're working around a tighter schedule or if the weather on the day doesn't cooperate with the original plan. It's one of the most forgiving locations we shoot at, without ever looking like a compromise.
