There is something about the long evenings and warm golden light in summer that makes outdoor maternity sessions feel genuinely effortless. The conditions we get in South Wales during late spring and early summer are some of the best we work in all year and if you are currently pregnant and have been wondering whether an outdoor session is right for you, here is everything you need to know.
Why outdoors works so well for maternity photography
A lot of people assume that a studio is the more serious or luxurious option for maternity photography. In reality, the outdoors gives us something a studio simply cannot replicate, space, natural movement and light that flatters in a way that's almost impossible to manufacture artificially. When the light is soft and directional, even the most simple setting becomes a stunning backdrop.
Every location we shoot at is chosen individually. Sometimes that means finding somewhere that works perfectly with the feel you want from your images, open fields with long grass, a woodland edge with dappled light or somewhere with a wider horizon and open sky. Sometimes it means shooting somewhere that already holds meaning for you, a place where something significant happened or somewhere you simply love. Either way, we make deliberate decisions at every location we use rather than picking somewhere pretty and hoping for the best.
What to wear for an outdoor maternity session
This is one of the most common questions we get and the answer is simple, we take care of it for you. We have a full wardrobe available for every session and we will guide you on exactly what works for your shape, the season and the location we are shooting at. You do not need to think about a thing.
When to book
The ideal time for your maternity session is between 28 and 34 weeks. At this point your bump is beautifully defined, you are still moving comfortably and we have plenty of time to plan everything properly before your due date.
If you are currently in the earlier weeks of your second trimester, now is the time to get in touch. Summer sessions book up faster than most other times of year and we only take a limited number of sessions each month to make sure every client gets the time and attention their session deserves.
What happens on the day
We will have spoken in detail before your session so by the time you arrive, nothing is left to chance. We know your location, your outfits and the kind of images you are hoping to walk away with. Your job on the day is simply to show up and enjoy it.
